The use of sol-fa with hand-signs is most effective when teaching students to sing in tune with understanding. As students sing, they are in fact analysing the melody and thinking in sound. Hand-signs provide the teacher with a visual indication of how the student is processing the sound.


4-beat melodic phrases using solfège syllables are provided in the Solfa music Flashcard sets. Ranging from simple 3 note patterns to more advanced patterns, they come in sets 1 – 3.

 

Music Flashcard Activity suggestions:


  • Perform in Rondo Form. Place cards in a column on the board to create the form ABACA and write the letter in a ‘form’ box to the left of each card. Perform.
  • Memorise: Remove firstly the A phrase (as it is the repeated pattern) and perform the entire sequence from memory. Gradually remove the other patterns until the entire sequence is memorised
  • Write from memory
  • Inner Hear: Sing all elements except one (all the ta’s or all the mi’s) keeping it ‘in your head’.
