Once students are conscious of metre, bar lines and the associated notation, and have been taught the 2 metre conducting pattern (approx. Year 2) , the teacher can then move onto 4 metre (approx.Year 3.) Music in 3 metre is quite tricky considering our very well-established 4 metre sense established through popular music so it is left until the following year (approx Yr 4 or 5). The conducting pattern of 4 metre is quite tricky, so Ruth will demonstrate strategies to scaffold the learning and ensure students feel that they can make mistakes, but jump back into the conducting pattern and ‘catch up’, beginning with the rest of the class on the start of the next pattern.
