Splash has got to be my #1 Rhythm Game for Year 3 and up.
The students love the challenge and I love it because it gives me the opportunity to assist students in their understanding of rhythm reading and performance. I am able to give individual feedback as to why a student may have gone out during the game while the rest of the class is still engaged, ready for the game to begin again.
Keep it special by only using it from when the students are learning tikatika (semiquavers).
As you may know, students are often unable to physically connect the verbal time names with the actual clapping of this rhythm. They often perform 3 sounds in their hands despite saying the French time names correctly. Ensure you give a slow tempo initially so all learners experience success….there are more tips to support individual needs in Part 2 of the game.
Stick notation flashcards are best if you are moving into a written dictation activity next. Note head flashcards are good for pure reading practice to assist in their understanding of stem placement.
